Muscat International Airport Receives First Indian GoAir Flight

Oman Airports welcomed GoAir's inaugural flight between Kannur International Airport and Muscat International Airport. The flight will be offered three times a week starting from March 1, 2019.

Oman Airports has been on a major drive to attract international airlines to Muscat International Airport, which opened its new terminal building in November 2018 to become one of the world’s best-connected international airports that is uniquely positioned to attract more international airline routes between Oman and the rest of the world in support of tourism activities and economic growth. Muscat has become a welcoming and attractive destination to business travelers as well as a vibrant destination for tourists who are keen to explore its unique natural beauty, rich history and wonderful experiences across all its governorates.

GoAir is one of the largest airlines in India with a fleet of 49 aircraft of different sizes. It currently operates more than 200 daily flights across 28 destinations, including 24 domestic destinations within India and 4 international destinations that cover, among others, Muscat International Airport and Abu Dhabi International Airport. GoAir flights take off from Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata and Bangalore airports.

With the inaugural flight from Kannur to Muscat International Airport, GoAir will offer direct flights between the Sultanate of Oman and India, contributing to the growth of the economic and tourism activity and the development of trade between the two countries, which have had historical, economic and tourist ties for several millennia.

Between April 2017 and March 2018, the total volume of trade between the two countries has grown rapidly to reach a total of US$ 6.7 billion. Additionally, statistics show that Indian and Omani firms have undertaken more than 3,200 joint ventures in a wide range of sectors across the Sultanate.

Oman is currently trending as a major tourist destination for Indian travelers who consider Muscat as one of the excellent picks to host nuptials as well as a shopping destination, thanks to its high-end venues that can provide the necessary settings and resources for weddings, and the increased number of shopping centers across the country. Moreover, Oman has given it the edge as a major destination for Indian tourists visiting friends and relations, with Oman being home to more than 637 thousand Indian expatriates, according to 2016 statistics, Expats reside, for work or conduct business in the country.

It is noteworthy that Muscat International Airport has joined the list of airports competing for the 2019 Skytrax Award for Best International Airport. The winning airport is scheduled to be announced on March 27th, 2019. Muscat International Airport has already collected several international awards in a record time since the launching of its commercial operations in March 2018. It was voted Best New Middle East Tourism Development Project just four weeks after starting its commercial operations and won the prestigious title of the World's Leading New Airport in 2018 at the World Travel Awards. Oman Airports was also the recipient of the prestigious Sultan Qaboos Award for Excellence in eGovernment 2018 in the Best Private Sector eService category for the its Data eServices.

Muscat International Airport offers a unique experience for travelers through its modern and smart facilities, with a full range of shops, restaurants, exclusive business and first class lounges as well as 24-hour hospitality services. The airport hosts also a first-of-its-kind transit hotel, and a parking lot with various options, with internal shuttle services between the arrival and departure terminals and valet parking service. The airport is designed to meet the highest standards of quality and service set by the International Air Transport Association (IATA), with a gross floor area of approximately 580,000 square meters and a capacity to serve 20 million passengers per year.
