Oman Airports continues efforts towards reaching zero carbon emissions

Salalah Airport has successfully obtained ACI Airport Carbon Accreditation, with an upgrade to Level 3, while Duqm Airport succeeded in achieving the 1st level in this ACI accreditation.

The accreditation comes as a culmination of the great efforts and substantial investments Oman Airports has made, and as part of its environmental compliance drive, and its endeavours to adopt green energy projects in its airports. With these measures, Oman Airports seeks to achieve net zero carbon emissions in line with the government’s directions by 2050.

In this context, Sheikh Aimen bin Ahmed bin Sultan Al Hosni, CEO of Oman Airports said: “I am honoured to congratulate the Sultanate for the new international recognition of our five-star airport, Salalah Airport, on obtaining an upgrade to Level 3 in the ACI Airport Carbon Accreditation, as well as having Duqm Airport achieving the 1st level.”

Al Hosni added: “I also would like to congratulate all the teams working at both airports for this important achievement, which we see as an international prestigious title that enhances our national and global leading role towards sustainability. We will also move forward to implement all environmentally responsible practices at all our airports to make them eco-friendly.”

The CEO further stated that these initiatives are major steps which harmonize with the efforts made by entities to act upon the royal directives of His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tariq, May Allah Protect Him, on achieving zero carbon emissions by 2050.
Al Hosni added: “We are committed to reducing our carbon emissions and promoting sustainable development in the aviation industry. We would like to thank our team for making this possible. We also stress on the importance of the joint efforts that contributed to achieving this success, and we look forward to continuing our work towards achieving the Sultanate’s ambitious sustainability goals.

The third level of the ACI Airport Carbon Accreditation provides an international framework for effective airport carbon management and continuous improvement through partnerships between the airport and its service partners.

Salalah Airport obtained this accreditation after the successful completion of the early stages, which included mapping the airport’s carbon footprint and implementing projects to reduce carbon emissions.

Meanwhile, Duqm Airport, for the third consecutive year, obtained the carbon accreditation certificate for the first “mapping” level, as a result of its efforts in adopting the best international standards in preserving the environment through the latest internationally accredited programs.

The renewal of the carbon accreditation certificate for this level comes within Oman Airports’ plans to push forward its efforts to reach higher levels in this field. The program consists of (4) international levels, of which the second and third levels were achieved by Muscat International Airport and Salalah Airport. The criteria include determining and measuring carbon emissions rates reducing rates, maintaining the lowest levels of carbon emissions and achieving carbon neutrality. The aim is to reduce carbon emissions in the environment surrounding airports operated by Oman Airports.

Notably, ACI Airport Carbon Accreditation is the only institutionally approved program for carbon management in airports. The program awards a certificate for each of its levels, each of which reflects the growing challenges in measuring, managing and improving carbon emissions.
