In their in ongoing effort to provide the best services and urgent medical care for passengers with extreme medical emergencies, Oman Airports recently signed an agreement with KIMS Hospitals Group to provide medical care services for Muscat International Airport passengers.
The agreement was signed by Sheikh Aimen bin Ahmed Al Hosni, CEO of Oman Airports, and Jakab, Chairman of KIMS Hospitals Group, and forms part of Oman Airports’ continuing plans to enhance its services at Muscat International Airport by providing the necessary medical assistance for people with urgent medical conditions – such as strokes, sudden cardiac arrest, or high-level injuries. The service applies to all arriving or departing passengers, employees working at Muscat International Airport, and cabin crew staff.
The 4-year agreement also aims to deal with emergency cases of flights urgently transferred to Muscat due to passengers’ serious health conditions during the flight, which require advanced medical intervention via the nearest hospital.
KIMS Hospitals Group will also provide an airside clinic (Airport yard) which is an outpatient clinic at the airport entrance in the ground floor. The facility will include two first aid rooms in the passenger terminal building’s departures area, and one first aid room in the arrivals area.
A medical team was appointed under the contract, which consists of two doctors and six nurses with expertise in the field of medical emergencies. Three ambulances with trained Omani drivers were also made available.
Currently, the new passenger terminal building at Muscat International Airport has a capacity of up to 20 million passengers. For the coming period, there is an additional three-phase expansion plan which will see airport capacity raised to 56 million passengers.
Oman Airports also seeks to increase efficiency in terms of providing medical services at the airport for its growing number of passengers, while adhering to the best international standards. This would contribute to achieving the objective of making Muscat International Airport one of the finest airports in the Middle East and the world. During the past periods, the airport’s medical clinic has provided prompt medical intervention to a number of passengers with urgent medical cases.
As a notable first, Muscat International Airport also recently witnessed the birth of a child by an Indonesian passenger who was on a Saudi Airlines flight coming from Jeddah and heading to Kuala Lumpur. The flight made an unscheduled landing at Muscat International Airport and the passenger successfully gave birth inside the plane, after all necessary medical care services were provided.
It is worth mentioning that Muscat International Airport was ranked among the best airports in the Middle East, in the category of 15 to 25 million passengers, at the Airport Service Quality (ASQ) Awards, implemented by ACI in partnership with Amadeus IT group. This came with the aim of recognising the best airports in the world in terms of passenger experience. Award-winning airports are selected based on passenger surveys collected at the airport on Travel Day 2023.
Statistics show that the number of passengers through Muscat International Airport reached around 4,718,497 passengers last May, marking an increase of 79%. The passengers travelled on 36,315 flights, which indicated a rise of 65.6%.
